About Me

author

Welcome!  Will try to hit the highlights of the ride that has been my life. Born and raised in NJ, I went off to the United States Naval Academy when I was 17, hell bent on becoming a Naval Aviator because I had watched the movie “Top Gun” 187 times.  After graduation in 1994, I headed down to flight school for about twenty minutes until a bout with testicular cancer and a subsequent heart issue derailed my plans.  Landing squarely on my engineering degree from USNA, I remained on active duty as a Civil Engineer Corps officer, including a tour with the famed Navy Seabees where I was both allowed to wear fatigues AND play with machine guns.  I retired in 2014 after 20 years of service. During my career I held numerous construction management and public works jobs, but my favorite tours were as a Seabee company commander and teaching engineering, naval weapons systems, and leadership at the Naval Academy.  Yes, they let ME teach.

While stationed in San Diego, there were two momentous life events.  The first was that I met and married my lovely wife Ivy.  The second was that I published my award winning book, GOD DOES HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR, which captures many of the more humorous events in my life, although at the time some of them weren’t all that funny.  My book (dedicated to my high school English teacher) received the 2007 Gold Medal for Humor from the Military Writersʼ Society of America, and in 2009, I was also humbled to receive the Presidentʼs Award for service to that organization.

To be honest, I have given away way more copies than I have sold, to cancer patients and wounded warriors around the world in hopes of bringing laughter to those going through tough times. I have also been an active speaker for cancer awareness and suicide prevention groups, relaying my personal experiences battling cancer and the associated depression, and am a mentor with the cancer support group Imerman Angels.

After retiring from active duty, I became the Senior Naval Science Instructor at Deptford High School in Deptford, NJ, where I teaches leadership, citizenship, and naval science to the cadets of the school’s Junior ROTC program. I am convinced I have the best job in the world.
